Chapter VIII

References

The titles of French and German works have not been translated. Titles of Nordic works are referred to in the original language followed by a translation, the latter corresponding to the title used in the text proper.
The titles of works published as books, as well as the titles of periodicals, journals and newspapers, are in italics. An exception is made for the original titles of Nordic books. I have chosen to do this in order to distinguish more easily between the original text and a non-existent translation as far  as major Nordic works are concerned. Unless originally written in English, none of the Nordic books are available in English translation. (Selma Lagerlöf's Nils Holgersson's  Wonderful Journey Through Sweden is the only exception.)
The titles of published articles are put in quotation marks, with sources (collection of articles, periodical) cited. Quotation marks are also being used for unpublished manuscripts, theses, reports, and papers, with reference to place of origin. The distinction between "manuscript" and
"paper" is a practical one: "Manuscripts" have been put at my disposal by the courtesy of the authors; "papers" have been copied and presented, partly as lectures, at conferences.
Further, all "manuscripts" are in my possession, while some of the "papers" referred to are known to me only through the reading of other authors' presentation of them. Most of the papers referred to as having been presented at the Georg-Eckert-Institut, are available in English, French and German.
The titles of Nordic works belonging to the group of articles, reports, manuscripts, and papers are translated into English in parenthesis, following the original title, whereas references to institutions and places of publication are indicated as in the original language. The reason for this is partly my wish to remind the reader that these translations are non-existent and partly that those wishing to acquire the documents may do so by making inquiries through local institutions in the countries of origin.
In the case of works with more than one author, the authors are listed in alphabetical order unless the names are arranged differently in the relevant publication.
If two or more editions of a particular title have been published, I shall be referring to the one most recent. In the  rare cases where contextual points differ in the various editions, references are made to year of publication for all editions concerned. Some references are made to
exceptionally long-lived textbooks, e.g. Munch, P.: Verdenshistorie. (A History of the World.) København 1907-1967.
